The Math Resource Center

Q1: I installed The Math Resource Center but the display does not look right. The colors on the screen look funny and/or the program does not fit correctly on my screen.
A1: Please note the screen display requirement is set to VGA graphics with 256 colors (640x480 resolution). To change the resolution to the correct format:

In Windows® 95--
Open the Control Panel and select (double click) the Display icon and then change the display to 256 colors with 640x480 resolution. This will give you a better view on the Practice screen.

In Windows® 3.1--
Open the Main Group, Select (double click) on the Windows Setup icon. When the Windows Setup dialog window opens, choose Option. Then change the display to 256 colors with 640x480 resolution. This will give you a better view on the Practice screen.

Note: If you are having a hard time locating the correct driver for the display, you can find it in the diskette that came with your VGA card.

Q2: When I am doing the practice questions, nothing happens when I click on the answer choices A, B, C, and D.
A2: The four possible answers A, B, C, and D are not buttons; they do not have any function when you click on them. Instead, there is a solution button. After you have worked the practice problem out, simply click on the solution button to check whether you've answered it correctly or not.

Q3: During the installation, there is an error message about fonts: "Could not install fonts....."
A3:  When you first install one of the CDs from The Math Resource Center to your system, the program installs two fonts to your system. When you install the second CD from the five-CD set, you will receive a message that states "Could not install fonts...." It is because the program has detected that the two required fonts are already in the system and will not re-install them. Just click on "ignore", "OK", or "continue" to bypass the messages. This will not affect the functionality of the program.

Q4: When I am running The Math Resource Center, I see strange fonts.
A4: The problem you are having with the program is due to wrong references to the fonts files. This is very easy to correct.

In Windows® 95:
Locate the Fonts folder within the Windows® 95 sub-directory and delete any font that has the name of Fences.??? or Mtextra.???. Then copy Fences.ttf and Mtextra.ttf from any one of The Math Resource Center CDs to the Fonts folder.

In Windows® 3.1:
Open the Control Panel, select (double click) the Fonts icon, choose Fences.ttf and Mtextra.ttf, and remove them. Remember to check on the "Delete From Disc" box when you remove Fences.ttf and Mtextra.ttf.

Click on Add, select Fences.ttf and Mtextra.ttf from any of The Math Resource Center CD-ROM discs, and add them back to your system.

Note: Before you add those two fonts back to your system, check if there are still fonts that have the file name of Fences.??? or Mtextra.???. If you find any fonts with Fences.??? Or Mtextra.???, just delete them.

Q5: I have Windows® 3.1 and I am facing problems when trying to install The Math Resource Center.
A5: You may be having setup problems because another software is conflicting with The Math Resource Center during setup. Software such as networking, LAN, and utility programs that are temporarily dominating Windows may be factors that are causing the problem. To solve this problem, temporarily disable the dominating programs. Then run The Math Resource Center setup program. You can reactivate the dominating programs afterwards.
OR
If you don't know which program to disable or how to disable it, you can setup The Math Resource Center manually.
1. In Program Manager: go to File, click on New, choose Program Group, then click on OK.
2. In the Program Group dialog window, type The Math Resource Center as the description, then click on OK.
3. While The Math Resource Center group window is still open (highlighted), go to File, click on New, choose Program Item, then click on OK.
4. In Program Item dialog window, type Algebra as the description, then type D:\mviewer2.exe mathlib2.mvb in the comment-line (make sure the Algebra CD is in the CD-ROM drive) where "D" is your CD-ROM drive letter. Then click on OK.
5. Windows will prompt you a message telling you that the path is addressed to a CD-ROM drive and may not be available unless you place the right CD into the drive the next time you run it. Click on OK to acknowledge it.
6. The Algebra Icon will appear in The Math Resource Center group. Just double click it to start the Algebra CD.

Repeat steps 4 through 6 to setup Geometry, Trigonometry, Calculus, and Statistics.
Please Note: The comment-line for the Geometry, Trigonometry, Calculus, and Statistics CDs are as follows:
For Geometry--
Comment-line= D:\mviewer2.exe mlp_geom.mvb
For Trigonometry--
Comment-line= D:\mviewer2.exe mlp_trig.mvb
For Calculus--
Comment-line= D:\mviewer2.exe mlp_calc.mvb
For Statistics--
Comment-line= D:\mviewer2.exe mlp_stat.mvb

Q7. When using The Math Resource Center, I am receiving an error message about "MCI Driver."
A7: you receive a message about the MCI driver, one of two things could be causing it:

A. You do not have a sound card.

A sound card will be required to run the program correctly. If you do not have a sound card, you will still be able to run the program. However, you will run into the MCI driver message each time the program is trying to load a sound file, and you will have to click on OK each time to close that message window to continue.

B. The MCI driver is not installed into your system.

After you have added the sound card to your system, you will have to install some sound devices that come with the sound card to control the playback sounds. These sound devices are critical for the sound card to play various sound formats. Please make sure that these sound devices are fully installed to your system.
